The Long Hallway

A hotel hallway that never ends, a row of doors leading to rooms that shouldn't exist. Luna checks in at a roadside inn in the Oregon Cascades and finds a corridor that stretches a mile longer than the building permits. Each episode of The Long Hallway is a standalone story tied to a different door — Room 207 with its mildew that writes warnings on the wallpaper, Room 314 where the dead bride still waits for her honeymoon, Room 412 that opens onto a field of frozen sunflowers under a moon that doesn't move. The hallway itself is the constant: a liminal space where time loops, where the housekeeping cart carries only silence, where the night manager speaks in a language that sounds like mice in the walls. Luna narrates these stories from the lobby armchair, her voice low as the dimming lamps, as she watches new guests arrive and old ones forget to leave. Some doors open to other decades, other dimensions, other kinds of hunger. The hallway is always watching. The hallway is always waiting for you to choose a door.

Jul 30, 2026 · 8:38

Summer 1998, Painted Rock, Arizona. Luna works the front desk at the Desert Glow Motel—a long, single-story building with a hallway that seems to stretch too far. A man checks in late, carrying only a suitcase and a heavy typewriter. He doesn't leave his room, but the typing never stops. When Luna finally opens the door, the room is empty except for a single sentence on the paper: 'She will never leave the hallway.' A story about the things that linger in cheap motel corridors, and the words…

November 1998. Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Luna takes a night clerk job at the Adobe Lodge to make ends meet. On her first shift, she notices a sliver of light under the door of Room 12—a room that’s supposed to be empty. Inside, she finds a half-empty glass of water, a static-filled TV, and a live feed of her own hallway. The next night, the TV shows a woman from 1972, staring through the screen. A quiet, slow-burn encounter about what lingers in motel rooms long after the guests check…

The Tapping at the Desert Inn

Jul 26, 2026 · 5:29

November 2019. A night clerk at a faded motor lodge in Ash Springs, Nevada, begins to hear a rhythmic tapping from the far end of the hallway—a sound that never gets closer, never stops. Each night she marks the floor with chalk, and each morning the marks are gone, the hallway stretching longer than before. The Desert Inn Motor Lodge had only fifteen rooms, but the corridor somehow holds more. This is a story about what waits at the end of a hall that shouldn't exist, and the sound that keeps…

The Endless Hallway of the El Camino Motor Inn

Jul 25, 2026 · 8:31

In May 1985, I pulled into the El Camino Motor Inn on Route 66 outside Kingman, Arizona. The clerk handed me a key to room 14 and pointed to a narrow corridor behind the front desk. That hallway stretched far longer than the building's exterior could contain, lined with identical doors and brass lamps fading into darkness. What I found along that corridor—a room where the window showed a stitched-together parking lot, a door ajar with a woman whose reflection was not her own, and numbers that…

Jul 23, 2026 · 8:51

June 1996. A woman waits at the Greyhound stop outside the Sage Motel in Glide, Oregon. She has been waiting for three nights, sitting on the same bench, watching the motel's sign flicker. Luna works the front desk that summer. She brings the woman coffee. She learns her name is Ellen. But Ellen doesn't want to get on the bus. She wants to tell Luna about the room she stayed in — Room 14 — and the thing that followed her out. A slow-burn episode about a kindness offered, a story received, and…

Jul 22, 2026 · 8:33

October 1994. Luna takes a housekeeping shift at the Ponderosa Lodge in Nowhere, New Mexico, a motel tucked off a dirt road seventy miles from the nearest town. The owner, a quiet woman named Delia, gives her a single rule: never knock on Room 12 after dark. But the hallway is long, the lights flicker, and the vacuum cord keeps pulling toward that door. Luna meets a guest who checks in with no luggage, a maid who quit without notice, and a bathroom mirror that reflects a room she is not…

The Room with the Wrong Number at the Sage Motel – March 2003

Jul 21, 2026 · 10:34

March 2003. A woman checks into the Sage Motel outside Tonopah, Nevada, at 2:17 AM. The clerk gives her a key to Room 21. But the door opens onto a room that shouldn't exist — a room from another motel, another state, another decade. The furniture is wrong. The smell is wrong. And on the nightstand, a photograph of a woman she almost recognizes. This is a story about the gap between the key and the lock, about doors that open not onto rooms but onto moments that were never meant to be seen.…

The Door at the End of the Hallway at the Desert Moon Motel

Jul 20, 2026 · 7:12

In November of 2022, I pulled into the Desert Moon Motel outside of Needles, California, just past midnight. The place was almost empty — a few trucks in the lot, a single light on behind the office glass. The clerk handed me a key to room 121 and said, without looking up, 'Don't go past the vending machine.' I asked what he meant. He just pointed down the hallway. I took the key. I walked past the vending machine. I kept walking. The hallway was longer than any building that size should have…

The Front Desk at the Sage Motel February 2024

Jul 19, 2026 · 5:56

February 2024. A woman driving from Tucson to Denver is forced off the road by an ice storm and checks into the Sage Motel in Wagon Mound, New Mexico. The night clerk, a man named Elias, checks her in without looking up from a paperback. Room 42. The key is brass, heavy, the number etched by hand. Later, she can't sleep. She goes to the lobby for coffee. The coffee pot is empty. The pot is warm. The clerk's chair is empty. The paperback is face-down on the counter. A door behind the front desk…

The Ice Machine at the Sage Motel January 2024

Jul 18, 2026 · 7:47

Luna returns to the Sage Motel one last time, in the dead of a January night in 2024. The ice machine has been replaced with a new one, but something is wrong with the ice. It tastes like copper and old pennies, and the cubes have something dark at their center. The motel manager, a man named Earl who's been there since the 80s, tells her the old machine was hauled away, but he keeps hearing it at night—the same grinding, the same thump. Luna walks the empty lot behind the motel and finds a…

The Broom Closet at the Frontier Motor Inn

Jul 17, 2026 · 9:04

It's October 1997, just outside Kingman, Arizona. Luna's cousin Del works the front desk at the Frontier Motor Inn, a low-slung motel on a stretch of Route 66 that nobody uses anymore. He calls her one night, says the broom closet at the end of the second-floor walkway has started making noise. Not a scratching or a knock — a sound like someone trying to speak through a mouthful of dust. Luna drives out to sit with him. The motel is nearly empty. The vacancy sign flickers. And the closet door…

The Man Who Fixed the Ice Machine at the Frontera Motor Lodge

Jul 16, 2026 · 8:22

September 1996. A traveling ice machine repairman checks into the Frontera Motor Lodge outside Deming, New Mexico. Room 9 has a deadbolt that doesn't work and a neighbor who knocks at three in the morning asking for a cigarette. The man fixes the machine in the morning, but something about the lobby — the way the clerk smiled at him, the way the door to Room 9 stayed open a crack when he came back — makes him drive east on I-10 and never look back. A quiet, dust-choked story about what you walk…

The Night Clerk at the Sunset Motor Inn

Jul 15, 2026 · 6:13

July 2003. A highway motel outside Kingman, Arizona. Luna worked the graveyard shift at the Sunset Motor Inn, a sixteen-room concrete block with a flickering vacancy sign. Most nights were silent. But one night, a man checked in whose face she'd seen before — in a photograph that shouldn't exist, behind a door that opened onto a hallway that couldn't be there. She never told anyone what she saw. This is the story of that July night, the room key that felt warm to the touch, and the housekeeper…

The Key to Room 14 at the Sage Motel

Jul 14, 2026 · 7:00

In June of 2022, Luna spent a week at the Sage Motel on the outskirts of El Paso, cataloging the property for a preservation grant. The motel had been closed for three years, its neon sign dark, its pool drained. She was alone there, except for the owner's son who stopped by each evening to check on her. On the third night, she found a key in the office drawer labeled Room 14. The room wasn't on any map. The door at the end of the west wing opened onto a hallway that didn't exist in the…

July 1994. The Sage Motel on Route 66 in New Mexico. A housekeeper named Dolores worked the graveyard shift alone. She had a system for the rooms she never entered. One night, a guest checked in who knew the system. He left the door open. Not a crack, but the full width. And he was waiting for her in the dark of room 8, with a Polaroid camera and a story about her own mother. This is the episode where Luna tells you what happens when the housekeeper's list of forbidden rooms gets longer by one.…

The Bellhop at the Carlton Motor Inn – March 2019

Jul 12, 2026 · 5:03

Luna recalls a night in March 2019 at the Carlton Motor Inn outside Marfa, Texas. The place was cheap, the hallway stretched too long, and the bellhop who showed her to her room had hollow eyes and a strange habit of pressing his ear to doors. He didn't work there. No one had seen him before. And when Luna woke at 3:00 AM to the sound of his steps stopping outside her own door, she understood why the inn's real staff had warned her to keep the chain on. #CarltonMotorInn #MarfaTexas #Bellhop…

The Vending Machine at the Dusty Boot Motel

Jul 11, 2026 · 7:48

In the dead of a July night in 2009, at a threadbare motel on the outskirts of Lordsburg, New Mexico, Luna found herself standing in front of a vending machine that wasn't supposed to be there. The machine sold only one thing: a brand of peanuts she hadn't seen since she was a child. The machine never ran out. The glass never showed her reflection. And the man in the parking lot — the one with the red handkerchief — he knew exactly what it was. This is a story about hunger. The kind that…

The Woman Who Checked Out at the Mesa Inn

Jul 10, 2026 · 4:25

It was late October in the high desert, just outside a town called Piñon Flats. I was staying at the Mesa Inn, a motel built in the fifties with a sign that still buzzed pink at night. The woman at the front desk gave me a room on the second floor, far end of the hall. She didn't look up from her magazine when she handed me the key. That night, around two in the morning, I heard the door across from mine open. I looked through the peephole and saw a woman in a pale blue dress standing in the…

The Smoking Lounge at the Desert Dunes Motel

Jul 9, 2026 · 10:34

A man named Harlan checks into the Desert Dunes Motel off Route 66 in Needles, California, in July 2019. He doesn't smoke, but the only room available has a smoking lounge attached — a small glassed-in porch with a single ashtray and a door that leads nowhere. The first night, he hears a woman's voice through the vent, clear as if she's sitting beside him, talking about a storm coming. He never finds out who she is. The motel has no record of any other guest in that wing. This is the story of…

December 2023. The Sage Motel, outside Wickenburg, Arizona. I went back one last time to see the ice machine that had been repaired, replaced, and finally removed. The new manager told me about the night the machine started again on its own, long after it had been disconnected. I stood in the empty alcove where it used to be and listened to the humming that wasn't there. November 2023. Luna returns to the Sage Motel on the outskirts of Needles, California, for what is supposed to be a routine overnight stop. But the ice machine in the alcove by Room 11 is still running, even though the motel has been closed for three years. The sound of it draws her into a loop she cannot break: a hallway that stretches longer than the building, a flickering fluorescent light, a door that opens onto the same cracked asphalt every time. Luna returns to the Sage Motel in late October 2022, a place she knows too well. The ice machine in the breezeway hums at all hours, but this time something is different: a woman in a raincoat stands by it every night, never getting ice. The manager says she's been there since 1998. Luna tries to leave but the hallway stretches, the doors look the same, and the machine keeps humming. The Boiler Room at the El Dorado Motor Lodge

Jul 5, 2026 · 7:13

Luna arrives at the El Dorado Motor Lodge outside Needles, California, in the dead of a July 1993 night. The place is nearly empty, the heat is suffocating, and the ice machine is broken. But the real problem is in the boiler room — a room that shouldn't exist, a sound that never stops, and a night clerk who refuses to answer questions. This is a story about a door that only opens one way, and a heat that doesn't come from the desert. Luna stays in Room 9, and by dawn she understands why the…

The Guest in Room 8 at the Adobe Motel – April 1997

Jul 4, 2026 · 6:52

April 1997. The Adobe Motel in Lordsburg, New Mexico — a single-story horseshoe of rooms around a cracked concrete courtyard. I checked in at dusk and noticed a woman standing outside Room 8, perfectly still, wearing a winter coat despite the heat. She didn't move when I passed. She didn't move when I came back from dinner. The clerk at the front desk told me she'd been there for three days, never left the spot, never spoke. He said her key was still inside on the nightstand. That night, I…

The Ice Maker at the Sage Motel – August 1998

Jul 3, 2026 · 7:50

August 1998. A dive motel off I-40 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. I was passing through on a drive from Oklahoma City to Flagstaff, and I stopped for the night at the Sage Motel, one of those neon-sign places that look like they haven't changed since the 1950s. The room was fine. The ice maker was in a small alcove near the office, behind a vending machine. Around 2 a.m., I went to fill my bucket. That's when I noticed the machine wasn't humming — it was clicking. Each ice cube dropped with a sound…

Jul 2, 2026 · 9:53

August 1998, just outside of Needles, California. The Sage Motel was the last place you could get a room before the desert turned into something else—something that didn't want you passing through. I stayed there one night, and the ice machine in the breezeway made a sound that wasn't mechanical. It was rhythmic, almost pleading, like someone trying to form words through a mouthful of frozen air. The manager told me not to use it after midnight, but I was thirsty. What I found inside that…

Jul 1, 2026 · 6:25

I spent one night at the Adobe Lodge in Deming, New Mexico, in late October of 2018. The motel was old—fifties-era, adobe-style, with a gravel parking lot and a flickering vacancy sign. The room was fine. But the linen closet at the end of the hall… it wasn't locked. And what I found inside wasn't towels. This is a story about a woman named Rosalind who worked the front desk, about the smell of lavender and bleach, and about the door I should have never opened. It's about the things motels…

It was the autumn of 2018, somewhere off a forgotten stretch of Highway 54 in New Mexico, when I pulled into the Yucca Motor Lodge. A two-story horseshoe of faded pink stucco, a flickering vacancy sign, and a parking lot scattered with dead leaves. Luna checks into the Frontera Motor Lodge on a drive through to El Paso. Room 7 has a lock that doesn't catch, a window that looks out onto a wall, and a woman in the next room who knocks on the wall at exactly 2:17 AM. Not to complain. Not for help. The night clerk is a young man named Danny, too chatty for that hour, who keeps circling back to the same question: 'You sure you got the right room?' The clerk is a woman in her fifties with a scar across her throat, who speaks without moving her lips. She gives Luna Room 8 and tells her not to open the connecting door to Room 9, no matter what she hears. What Luna hears, starting at 3:14 AM, is the sound of someone knocking…
